Math Lab Overview
Math Lab at Sunshine Virtual Academy provides comprehensive mathematics instruction for students in Grades Kâ5, using a structured and engaging approach to build a strong foundation in math skills. Instruction follows the CRA model (Concrete, Representational, Abstract), allowing students to first explore concepts with hands-on manipulatives before progressing to visual models and abstract thinking. Using the Guided Release Model, teachers gradually shift responsibility to students by first modeling skills, then guiding practice, and finally encouraging students to solve problems independently. Spiral review is embedded throughout instruction to ensure key concepts are continuously reinforced and retained over time.
Students also participate in problem-based learning projects that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world application of math skills. Gamified practice activities add an element of excitement and motivation, turning skill-building into an engaging experience. Through this dynamic and supportive environment, Math Lab helps students build deep conceptual understanding, confidence, and a genuine love for learning math.

Our approach emphasizes systematic and explicit instruction that focuses on developing both procedural and conceptual understanding. Students develop strong mathematical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through the CRA model (Concrete, Representational, Abstract), utilizing both concrete and virtual representations, and through the explicit teaching of math language and problem-solving strategies. Instruction is carefully designed to ensure that students have a deep understanding of math concepts while becoming confident and flexible problem solvers. Ongoing assessment and feedback are integrated throughout the program to monitor growth and provide continuous, personalized support for every learner.
Individualized Learning Pathways
The math program at Sunshine Virtual Academy is designed to be fully customizable to your child's exact learning needs. Whether your child requires an easier or more challenging grade level outside their current age range, we can adapt their learning path accordingly.
We use formative and summative assessments in each unit of study to ensure that your child's program placement matches their true skill level. Together, we will create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), outlining your child's math program, specific learning goals, a progress monitoring timeline, and how often results will be communicated. You are always in control of your child's learning plan and will be fully informed at every step about how your child is progressing and responding to the program.
